You want to feel confident that they can do the job and do the job well. You also want to be comfortable with your builder – a good working relationship will be essential for long projects.
When looking for a builder, don’t just flip through the pages of your local phone book and pick a builder with a large ad. Although large ads are often a good sign – some say a large ad indicates a company that has been around and has an investment in its community and providing quality service – don’t just bank on the ad alone. As you go through the process of choosing the right builder, make sure you incorporate the following steps so you know for sure that you’re making the right choice.

Simple Tips
- Ask your friends and family for recommendations. Have they used a builder in the past that they liked or disliked? Why? Both positive and negative comments can highlight points you want to consider.
- Ask potential builders for a list of references. Any reputable builder should be more than happy to supply a list of past customers that you can talk to or visit in person to see the builder’s work up close.
- Provide a detailed description of the work you want done on your home. If possible, provide pictures or drawings to illustrate what you want.
- Don’t just talk to one builder; ask three builders to prepare quotes for your renovation. Send your description to each builder when requesting a quote.
- Review the quotes to make sure they answer all your questions. The quote should cover everything you want done: material costs, removal costs, labor costs and clean up costs.
- Confirm how the builder wants to be paid. Most builders ask for a percentage at installments throughout the project, as each stage is completed.
- Confirm that the builder offers a guarantee or insurance on their work.
